Clinical Pastoral Education
- NEW SPRING Schedule
March 2 - May 18, 2010
Clinical Pastoral Education is theological and professional education for ministry. In CPE, pastors, church staff, theological students, and qualified laypeople provide spiritual care to people in intimate and sometimes critical life situations while being supervised. It focuses on the development of self-awareness, formation of pastoral identity, professional functioning, and the ability to address issues from a competent clinical and pastoral perspective.
Benefits- Listed below are only a few of the many benefits:
- increased pastoral care and counseling skills
- increased self-awareness and self-confidence
- skill development for working through relational and conflictual challenges
- ability to understand the systemic issues related to congregational and other institutional settings
- preparation for vocational ministry in chaplaincy
Teaching Seminars- The teaching seminars focus on topics such as:
- Crisis Intervention
- Grief and Loss
- Family Systems
- Spiritual and Clinical Assessments
- Ethical Issues
- Power of Blessing
- Trauma Ministry
- Listening Skills
- Theological Reflection
Ministry Sites- Participants must have an internship site for conducting face-to-face ministry to others. The settings may vary from person to person and may include locations such as one's congregation, local healthcare facility, correctional facilities, and so forth.
Video/Tele-Conferencing Model- It is now possible to participate in CPE via the internet through Video/Teleconferencing. This new methodology allows one to participate without having the cost and time for travel to the training location.
Schedule - A unit of CPE is 400 clinical hours, which can be met in two different ways – intensive units of training or in a more extended unit of training. The intensive units require a minimum of 20 hours per week of conducting face-to-face ministry, and the extended units require a minimum of 10 hours per week in a ministry setting.
- Intensive Units - $895
- Extended Units - $1000 (see brochure for details)
- Application Fee - $75

Former student recommends CPE:
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) has helped me professionally to deal with systemic issues in the church such as conflict management and triangulation. It has helped me to identify personal emotional triggers and develop the skills to disarm them… Would I highly recommend C.P.E.? Absolutely! It is a must for pastors! My only regret in taking CPE is that I didn't do it sooner as a pastor. Rev. Daniel B. Dellinger, Pastor, First Southern Baptist Church Westminster
